Little Things Add Up To Big Savings At The Gas Pump

They may not seem like much by themselves.  All of them combined will save big at the pump.  And not a single one of these tips will cost you money and involves very little of your time.  Besides the obvious car pooling, bicycle riding or walking ideas for saving gas.  Which are all very good ideas.  These tips will help increase your fuel efficiency when driving your car.

  1. Check your tires once a month for proper inflation.  Not only will it prevent flats and allow car to handle better.  Maintaining the recommended tire pressure as specified for your car improves gas mileage.
  2. As a matter of fact your car gets better gas mileage when your motor is running smoothly.
  3. Leaving windows open, including the sunroof while driving causes something called wind drag.  This slows down your car and decreases fuel efficiency by about 10%.
  4. Keep just what is needed in your trunk, like a spare tire or other emergency equipment.  Carrying around extra weight decreases fuel efficiency.
  5. Added weight drags on the engine, causing it to use more fuel.  So why not take off the roof rack when it's not being used.
  6. Most gas is consumed when you hit the pedal to accelerate.  It just makes common sense to maintain a selected speed.
  7. Speeding increases the cost of your gasoline per gallon
  8. Try to use gentle even pressure to accelerate and slow down.  Believe me, it helps improve your fuel efficiency.
  9. Gas expands with heat.  You'll get more gas for the same price by fueling up early in the morning or late at night when the outside temperature, not to mention the car's gas tank is cooler.
  10. A lot of gas stations raise prices at the pump during the weekend when the demand is greater.  Not all but some.  Your best bet would be to get your gas in the middle of the week.
  11. And of course planning your errand running efficiently so you're not going back and forth across town would be wise.
