22 Tips For Garage Sale Success

  • Nothing should be priced under $1. Small items can be grouped together in a baggie for $1. The see through grab bags always catch my eye at the thrift stores. If I spot at least one "gotta have" item in the bag plus all that other stuff, I am a buyer. Taking small change out of the equation as much as possible makes so much sense.
  • No discounts before noon. Having clear boundaries keeps things running smoothly during the sale. A schedule for markdowns is a good idea. $1 is much easier to markdown than 25 cents. Advertise the markdown schedule too.
  • Think about the questions you know the shoppers will ask and have responses ready. Can we use your restroom? Bulk sales? Discount?
  • Keep items organized as the sale goes on.
  • Play music only during the slow times.
  • Two people should be manning the sale at all time.
  • Keep the peace. Don't argue in front of your shoppers. If everyone wore the same color during the sale, they would be easier to find when it gets busy.
  • All clothes should be hung up for easy access.
  • Nothing on the ground. Only a few exceptions.
  • Books stacked where the title on the spine is visible. I have put the books in smaller boxes, so they won't be so heavy once full, with spine up and found this useful.
  • Make sure everything is priced. The bigger the item, the bigger the size of the price tag should be. Prices should be visible. People do not want to hunt for a price.
  • Keep running totals for each seller involved.
  • Keep an assortment of change on hand at all times. You don't want to risk losing a sale because you don't have change.

  • Expenses should be divided evenly among all sellers.
  • Have plenty of bags, boxes and packing for purchases. Helps to start gathering these way before the sale is set to begin.
  • Always have a table or box full of free items.
  • Group like items together and have a sign for the grouping.
  • Put decent sale signs with arrows on every possible corner in your neighborhood. Main roads with lots of traffic are great assets for your sale. Don't underestimate their power. Bright pink or white is more noticeable.
  • Brainstorm about ways to make money during the sale. For example: drinks, baked goods, or plant starts.
  • Advertise your sale on line. Don't forget the pictures. Gsalr.com, yardsales.net, yardsalesearch.com, garagesalefinder.com, garagesaletracker.com, craigslist.com. This is just a few places that come to mind.
  • Tell your neighbors you plan on having a sale. Give them enough time to put out a sale of their own. The more sales in the same area will attract shoppers.
  • Have a plan in place for left overs. Donate to thrift stores. Giveaway?. Throw away? You will be tired after making all that money, having a plan will make closing the sale stress free.

I found a great widget on the gsalr.com website. It's free and available for anyone to place on their website. Mine is displaying a map with the local sales in Springfield Missouri.

When Frugal Makes Cents

Buying in bulk may not be that good a deal if you have to find room to store large quantities of items you won't use in a relatively short period of time.  A better solution might be purchasing bulk products in common with family members or friends, so everyone saves money without incurring excess clutter.

Comforters facilitate bed making by reducing the number of sheets, blankets, etc., you need.  You'll also cut down on the amount of dirty laundry you have to wash.

Literally as well as symbolically, holes in the pocket s of clothing allowing money to slip away.  Mend them!

Just because you received something as a birthday present or housewarming gift doesn't mean you have to hold on to it forever.  If you don't like it or never use it, pass it on to someone who will.  Re-gifting is not a sin.  Rather than buying friends and family member more stuff, give them consumable presents.  Concert or theater tickets or a gift card to their favorite store or restaurant should keep you safe from being a victim of re-gifting.
Many spices come in nearly identical jars or tins.  Alphabetical organization enables you to find what you need quickly and prevents you from grabbing the wrong one by mistake.  Before you replace spices, assess your needs with a critical eye-it may not be space or cost effective to buy something you'll only use once a year.  Spices lose their potency over time.

Turn single socks into dust cloths.

Coffee can are ideal for shipping or storing breakables.

It can be tempting to buy something when it's on sale.  But remember, a good deal is only a good deal if you really need it and are going to use it soon.

Costco - I typed "free samples" in a search box on their site and was presented with three choices; Nicorette gum (tropical flavor), a hair product and contact solution.

Whatever the brand is you like, check out their website.  You might find free samples, coupons or tips you can use.  Some of them were offering recipes, sweepstakes and fun games.  One site had an app for facebook titled, "TP-A-Friend".  I can't wait to use it.  It comes from Charmin, of course.  Lol!!!
Another great site I didn't get listed above, Nestle.  They have links to their different product sites, where I'm sure you'll find coupons and stuff.  Even though I couldn't find "offers", I found lots of entertainment.

Don't forget to check out my FREEBIES page with an updated list.

Jewelry Pendants and Adorable Scented Soaps

It might sound like an odd combination but the way Janice, at Designs by Machado, presents them is certainly not odd at all.  Her products and prices are presented in a refreshing straight-forward style all her own.  Vivid pictures of every item neatly displayed with a brief comment underneath.
I ordered this pendant from Janice recently and received it only 2 days later.  It arrived well intact and I could tell it had been prepared for shipping with TLC (tender-loving-care).
Included in my package was a very nice surprise.  It was a beautiful flower arrangement pin that I thought was quite charming and can't wait to wear.  Not so sure a free gift is always included in your order, but it was a nice surprise and it made me feel very special.
Thank You Janice!
Some new items have been added to her page and I've got my eye on this glass leaf pendant necklace.  It's only $2.00!  Unbelievable, don't you think?
And the soaps are quite charming too.  I was thinking what a great addition these would make for the gift baskets I make for friends & family.  Not too mention a welcome addition to the bathroom with their pleasing scents.
She's a sweet person and very easy to talk to.  You are invited to email her with any questions you might have and she promises to return a prompt reply.  Here's the link again.  Check it out.  I know you will be as delighted as I was to find elegance and charm in a world that does without.
