- The bigger the roller, the looser the set; the smaller the roller, the tighter the set.
- The coarser or the curlier your hair is, the larger the roller you need. Medium hair takes a medium roller. Thin, straight, fine hair takes a smaller roller.
- Rollers are responsible for the puffed wave or freer style. Pin curls make curls or waves that stay snug to the head. Sets can be wound on rollers along with the use of a few pin curls.
- To anchor the roller to your head, use a clip at the base run horizontally through the curler and your hair. To keep the rollers in place on the crown of your head, clip on to the other where they meet.
- Work with thin sections, well combed out and not matted, of about one and one half or two inches wide. Never try to roll big, matted hunks of hair.
On the crown, hold the strand up and away from the scalp to create a lift in this section; at the sides and back pull the strand straight out from the scalp; at the forehead pull the strand forward from the scalp. Then wind each curl all the way to the scalp.
